Looking for family picture ideas with teenagers that aren't all about standing in a straight line? Try a close group hug, a seat on the steps or a playful photo by the water.
There are simple poses here plus a few sillier ones if your family wants to mix things up.
You can keep everyone together or take a few smaller group pictures. Some references include younger children too, so borrow the arrangement rather than trying to match every detail.
Family photo poses worth saving
white tops and blue jeans
We're starting off with this simple white-and-blue combination. Everyone wears a different white top with blue jeans, so the outfits match without being exactly the same.
Stand close together against a plain background to try this look. The bare feet are a sweet little detail for a studio portrait.

piggybacks on the path
How fun is this? Two piggyback pairs frame the person walking in the middle. I love the big smiles and the black-and-white finish.
If everyone involved is happy and able to try a piggyback, keep it on level ground. You could also stay standing and put your arms around each other's shoulders.
a seat on the steps
If you are looking for a seated pose, this one is for you. The group spreads across a few steps, with orange, burgundy and black tops mixed with blue jeans.
Have some people sit a step higher than others, then turn toward each other. You don't all have to look at the camera.
a sunset hand star
Don't want faces in every single picture? No problem! This photo uses outstretched fingers to make a star around the setting sun.
I love the golden reflection through the middle. Try this as an extra shot during a family evening by the water.
a piggyback for two
This is another piggyback idea, but it's a little different from the group picture above. The low camera angle puts both faces against a big blue sky, with lily pads visible below.

For your own session, you could use this pose for a parent-and-teen picture or a sibling pair. Choose a level spot safely back from the water.
walking and hugging
I love how this collage includes a hand-in-hand walk, a close hug and a standing group picture. The pale blue dress and olive pants look so pretty beside the dark floral print.

Try a few different arrangements in the same spot rather than stopping after one pose. The close group hug may just be my favorite here.
together by the brick wall
Want something other than a field or park? This brick-lined setting gives you another option.
The group stands close, with taller people toward the back and a bright pink skirt near the front.
Let everyone keep a little of their own style. The burgundy, gray and blue outfits work together without matching.
a hug from both sides
How sweet is this three-person portrait? The two people behind wrap their arms around the person in front, with all three faces close together.

The white and pale beige tops are lovely against the grass. Save this pose for a smaller group picture during your family session.
a silly group lift
Looks like this group decided to skip the serious pose, lol! One person is held sideways while the others smile or pull a silly face.
The boots sticking out to the left make it even more playful.
Only try a lift if everyone agrees and can do it safely. You can borrow the silly expressions without lifting anyone at all.
heads together in the grass
If you're looking for a different angle, this one is worth saving. Four people lie in the grass with their heads together and look up toward the camera.
I love the white outfits beside the brown top and pale blue jacket. Ask your photographer about a safe overhead setup if you want to try this arrangement.
a seat on the tailgate
This reference features younger children rather than a teen group, but the tailgate arrangement is an idea you could adapt. Everyone sits close together on the back of a pickup, with trees behind them.
For teenagers, leave more room between people on the tailgate and check the parked truck's tailgate capacity. I especially like the orange outfit among the blues and browns.
three in front
This is such a cute way to include two little groups in one picture. Three young people stand together in front while two adults hold hands farther down the grassy path.
For your own photo, keep the front group close with arms around each other. The rust, burgundy and green outfit colors are pretty with the yellow flowers.
a seated shoulder turn
Don't want another standing portrait? Try this seated row instead.
Everyone sits along a blanket with their bodies facing sideways, then turns back toward the camera.
I love the black-and-white version. Keep enough space between faces so no one gets hidden behind a shoulder.
blue and white by the water
The blue-and-white pairing is so pretty in this dockside picture. Everyone sits close together, with arms around shoulders and legs angled in different directions.
This reference includes younger children too. For your own family, borrow the close seated arrangement and choose a roomy spot well away from the dock's edge.
a simple leafy backdrop
If you're looking for something that doesn't need props or a complicated pose, go with this close standing group. I love the blue plaid shirt and burgundy patterned top against the leafy background.
Turn slightly inward and let arms rest around each other. A hand in a pocket works too, just like it does here.
holding hands and smiling
Last but definitely not least, we have this sweet two-person picture. I love that they're looking at each other instead of the camera.
The white dress and pale striped outfit look lovely together.
Try a parent-and-teen version with hands joined in front. Leave a little time to talk between shots rather than holding one smile.
