Looking for cold weather wedding guest outfits with more than a pretty dress to work with? Long brown coats, deep green gowns and a little sparkle give you plenty of ideas.
I especially love the matching dress-and-coat combinations.
You can keep things simple or dress things up. Match your choice to the invitation, then plan proper outerwear for any time outside.
Some pictures need a few changes for a wedding, particularly the pale outfits and the casual jeans look.
Wedding guest looks and layers to inspire your outfit
brown pleats and a long coat
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous brown dress and matching long coat. I love the narrow pleats running down the skirt.
The little gathered bag keeps the brown theme going.

Try black pointed boots beneath the hem to follow this look.
floral tights and sparkling straps
How pretty are these floral tights? They show through the opening in the black skirt, with sparkling ankle straps adding another little detail.
The sleeveless black top and silver-colored clutch make this a lovely reception look. I’d keep the long earrings too.
gray wrap over black
I am obsessed with this gray shoulder wrap. It’s so pretty against the long-sleeve black dress, especially with those dangling geometric earrings.
Try a small black clutch to keep the rest simple. The red lipstick is a lovely finishing touch.
black midi and gold buckle
If you are looking for something simple to put together, this one is for you. The black high-neck top, midi skirt and pointed boots look so good together.
Keep the gold-tone buckle at the waist. For a dressier invitation, I’d swap the large bag for a small evening clutch.
brown suit and cream neckline
Don’t want to wear a dress? No problem!
This brown blazer and wide-leg trouser pairing gives you another option. I love the cream rolled neckline and cuffs peeking out.
A black bag with gold-colored hardware finishes the outfit without adding another color.
burgundy draping and a veiled headpiece
This burgundy outfit may just be one of my favorites here. I love the draping across the shoulders and the long panel falling down one side.
The little veiled headpiece is such a pretty extra. Choose a small dark clutch if you want to follow the same combination.
belted cape and tall boots
Love a cape silhouette? This cream version has wide lapels, a tied waist and black knee-high boots underneath.
The mostly ivory outfit needs a color change for many weddings unless the couple specifically welcomes it. I’d try the same belted shape in navy with the black boots and chain-strap bag.
green gown with gathered details
I am obsessed with this deep green gown. The folds across the high neckline and the gathering at the waist are absolutely gorgeous.

There’s already plenty going on in the dress. I’d choose small earrings and leave the neckline just as it is.
navy separates and brown boots
The navy and brown pairing is so pretty in this outfit. A simple long-sleeve top sits above a shiny midi skirt, with brown boots showing below the hem.
Save this for a less formal invitation. The heart pendant and brown clutch are lovely details to borrow.
pale dress and a draped wrap
I love the loose wrap over this long, pale dress. The angled edge falls across the skirt, with a small striped clutch held in front.
This cream-and-beige combination could read bridal, so check with the couple before choosing it. For another version, try a navy dress with a gray wrap.
burgundy cardigan and plaid skirt
How cute are those little bow earrings? This collage pairs them with a burgundy cardigan and a brown plaid skirt with an uneven hem.
It leans more casual than the gowns here, so keep it for a relaxed dress code. I’d borrow the pointed black boots and gold-tone details.
high-neck black jumpsuit
If you’re looking for a dress alternative without lots of separate pieces, go with a black jumpsuit like this one. The high neckline, gathered shoulders and wide legs are so pretty.
Add dangling earrings if you want a little sparkle near your face.
camel coat and navy trousers
Don’t want to go overboard with color? No problem!
This collage brings together a long camel coat, navy high-neck top and matching trousers.
I especially love the glossy navy pumps. Try the white drop earrings and small top-handle bag to dress up the simple separates.
gold sparkle and a black coat
Bring a little shine to your outfit with a gold-colored sparkling top. The pale pleated trousers and matching pointed shoes keep this look light underneath the black coat.
The shiny rectangular clutch is gorgeous too. If the wedding avoids ivory or champagne outfits, I’d switch the trousers to black.
green gown with full sleeves
This is another gorgeous green dress, but it’s a little different from the one above. I love the square neckline and those full sleeves gathered at the wrists.

The skirt crosses over at the front with gold-colored sandals peeking out. Small drop earrings finish the look.
chocolate dress and matching coat
This is actually one of my favorite matching combinations on the list. The long brown dress has a wide neckline and extra-long sleeves, with a brown coat draped over the shoulders.

Keep the little black bag and pointed shoes if you want to recreate the same look.
taupe cardigan and jeans
This one is a casual outfit rather than a wedding-ready look. The taupe cardigan, pale tee and blue jeans would need a very relaxed invitation that explicitly allows denim.
I like the cardigan’s oversized sleeves as layering inspiration. For a dressier variation, try it over a dark midi dress instead of the tee and jeans.
burgundy dress and patterned shawl
How gorgeous is this burgundy dress with the patterned shawl? The long fringe and brown ankle boots look so pretty together.
The deep V neckline leaves room for jewelry, but I love the simple choice of gold-tone hoops here. There’s no need to add more if you prefer it this way.
brown coat and taupe trousers
If you love brown but don’t want a matching suit, try this combination. A dark brown top and long coat sit above lighter taupe trousers.
The burgundy gloves and large clutch are my favorite details. For a dressier wedding version, I’d choose a smaller bag and add sparkling earrings.
brown suit and gray overcoat
Last but definitely not least, we have this handsome brown suit and long gray overcoat. I love the double-breasted jacket with the dark reddish-brown tie.
The white shirt keeps the layers underneath clearly defined. Try dark shoes and leave the coat open to show the suit, just like this.
