Looking for wedding cake flavors you’ll actually be excited to taste? Raspberry and lemon, chocolate and coconut or a simple vanilla cake give you plenty to start with.
These cakes bring together pretty decorations and ideas for your tasting list.
You can keep it classic or try something a little different. A photo can’t tell us what’s inside, so the flavor pairings below are suggestions inspired by the designs, not confirmed recipes.
Wedding cakes and flavor pairings worth saving
raspberries and a yellow swirl
We’re starting off strong with this pretty little raspberry-topped cake. I love the yellow swirl in the middle and the tiny white flowers tucked between the piped swirls.
For your own version, try lemon cake with raspberry filling. Keep the pale frosting and bright berries if you want this same cheerful look.
raspberry vintage tiers
How gorgeous is this? The white ruffles, little dots and rows of raspberries make these three tiers look so sweet.
Vanilla cake with raspberry filling would be a lovely choice beneath this decoration. Ask for the generous berry topping if that’s your favorite part too.
dark and pale tiers
Can’t decide between a dark cake and a white one? This design gives you both, with a pale middle tier between two brown tiers and little white flowers around the edges.
You could follow that idea with separate chocolate and vanilla tiers. There’s no need to choose just one flavor for the whole cake.
white ridges and red crumbs
If you love red velvet, save this one for your tasting appointment. The deep red crumbs against white frosting are such a pretty starting point for that flavor.
I especially love the piped swirls on top. Ask your baker about red velvet with cream cheese frosting to try your own version.
ivory swags and a couple topper
I am obsessed with the little dotted swags on this cake. The tall ivory tiers and couple topper keep everything classic.
Don’t want fruit or chocolate decorations? No problem!
You could choose vanilla bean cake with a vanilla filling and keep all the attention on that gorgeous piping.
figs and autumn flowers
This single-tier cake may just be one of my favorites here. I love the muted flowers above the lightly frosted sides, with a cut fig and dark berries down at the base.
For an autumn-inspired pairing, put spice cake with fig filling on your tasting list. Have your baker handle food-safe flower placement separately from the filling.
pink rosebuds and green crumbs
How cute are those tiny pink rosebuds? The green crumbs and scattered petals look so pretty against the white spiral frosting.
This would be lovely inspiration for pistachio cake with a little rose flavor. Ask to taste a lightly floral version before deciding how much rose you want.
figs and golden drips
If you are looking for a cake with lots of little details, then this one is for you. There are exposed layers, golden-brown drips, cut figs and red flowers.
I’d try brown sugar cake with salted caramel filling for a version of this look. Keep a few drips rather than covering every edge.

ruffles and rows of berries
Here’s a closer look at that raspberry-and-ruffle idea. The shell-shaped piping and tiny hanging dots are just too pretty.
Want a different filling beneath the same decoration? White chocolate and raspberry would be another pairing to sample.
You can love the outside of a cake without copying what’s inside.
coconut and white flowers
Calling all coconut fans! The coconut half, white flowers and long green leaves give this cake such a lovely tropical look.
Try coconut cake with pineapple filling if you want to carry that idea into the slices. I’d keep the smooth top tier and the flaked finish below just like this.
a ring of lavender stems
Don’t want to go overboard with the piping? This tall white cake with lavender stems is a beautiful alternative.
Lemon cake with a gentle lavender filling would be worth sampling. Let your baker source culinary lavender for the flavor rather than treating decorative stems as ingredients.
stacked cookies and white filling
Who says you have to choose a traditional frosted cake? This cookie-style stack has thick white filling between the brown layers, plus cookie sandwiches underneath.
I love this as inspiration for a chocolate chip cookie cake with vanilla filling. The matching little sandwiches are a cute idea for your dessert table too.
colorful flecks and a heart topper
How fun is this cake? The exposed pale layers show off little flecks of color, with white filling and piped dots between the tiers.
Ask for a funfetti-style vanilla cake if you want a similar look. You really don’t need lots of extra decorations here. That big heart topper is plenty.
cookie borders and piped swirls
The little round cookies are my favorite part of this one. They line the bottom edge and stand between white swirls on top, with crumbs filling the center.
If banana pudding is your favorite dessert, ask your baker about a cake inspired by it. Banana cake with vanilla filling could be a starting point for your tasting.
floral heart-shaped tiers
OMG, how adorable are these heart-shaped tiers? I love the tiny red and peach flowers tucked into all that ivory piping.

For a flavor idea to go with this romantic design, try almond cake with cherry filling. Keep the little green leaves too. They make the flowers even prettier.
strawberries and pink edges
This is such a pretty way to show off your cake layers. Pale sponge, red filling bands and pink frosting are all visible, with strawberries decorating each tier.
Strawberry shortcake-inspired flavors would be a lovely direction to explore. Ask to sample vanilla cake with strawberry filling before choosing your frosting.
brown dusting and wedding lettering
Don’t want flowers or a tall stack of tiers? This low round cake keeps things simple with a brown-dusted top, rounded border and pale “Just Married” lettering.
I’d use this as inspiration for a tiramisu-style dessert. Coffee, cocoa and mascarpone are a combination to discuss with your baker if you want something different from a frosted layer cake.
dark layers and textured filling
The dark layers and chunky pale filling look so striking here. I especially love the deep burgundy flower on top.
For your own cake, consider a German chocolate-inspired combination with coconut-pecan filling. Leaving the sides uncovered would let that filling become part of the decoration too.
gold flecks and autumn blooms
I love this white cake with its orange, golden-tan and deep purple flowers. The scattered gold-colored flecks are such a pretty extra touch.
The decoration doesn’t reveal the flavor, so choose something you love underneath. Carrot cake with cream cheese filling would be on my tasting list for an autumn version.

a little cake tasting box
Last but definitely not least, we have the tasting box! The slices here are labeled red velvet, pumpkin, vanilla, carrot and chocolate, with separate little tubs alongside them.
Still deciding between wedding cake flavors? Ask whether your baker offers a box like this.
Taste the cakes on their own first, then compare them with the fillings so you can pick your favorite combination.
